Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker has respectfully declined her recent appointment to the Board of the Guma Valley Water Company, a decision made just days after the State House announced her selection.

In a letter to President Julius Maada Bio, Dr. Majeks-Walker expressed sincere appreciation for the confidence shown in her, acknowledging her initial excitement to support the administration's "radical inclusion" vision. However, she revealed that the decision to withdraw was heavily influenced by her family, who strongly advised against the move. Their primary concern, she noted, was that the necessary parliamentary vetting process could be misinterpreted as a political alignment, potentially compromising the neutrality she maintains in her work.

The family's caution is rooted in a past negative experience in public service. Dr. Majeks-Walker referenced her previous tenure as Chair of the Hospital Teaching Service, where she was replaced without clear notice after implementing significant systems and reforms. This incident, she stated, has made her children particularly protective and wary of her re-entering such roles.

Ultimately, Dr. Majeks-Walker’s decision stems from a need to safeguard the non-partisan integrity of her work with various organizations focused on accountability, peacebuilding, and women’s leadership. She chose to honor both her commitments to neutrality and the concerns of her family, who wish to shield her from any potential political fallout.

While her desire to contribute to the transformation of the Guma Valley Water Company remains sincere—especially given the operational and logistical challenges she has observed—Dr. Majeks-Walker concluded her message with a respectful apology to the President. She described the withdrawal as a difficult choice, one not born of a lack of willingness to serve the nation.

The presidency has yet to issue a public statement regarding Dr. Majeks-Walker's withdrawal.
