The Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST) has taken a decisive step toward energy independence with the commissioning of a new solar power initiative. Designed to replace intermittent power with a reliable electricity supply, the project is being positioned as a strategic investment in research productivity and student welfare.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Momoh officially launched the project with a direct appeal to the student body, stating, "Students, this is your project". He emphasized that the initiative is essential for facilitating evening studies, laboratory research, and digital innovation activities that require consistent power.

The university’s shift toward renewable energy addresses the chronic power challenges that have long hindered higher education institutions in the region. By adopting this climate-smart infrastructure, EBKUST aims to reduce operational costs, promote environmental sustainability, and ensure academic continuity.

The project is expected to have a tangible impact on the campus experience, particularly for students in engineering, information technology, and applied sciences who rely heavily on laboratory facilities and ICT resources. By extending study hours and eliminating the disruptions caused by power outages, the university hopes to foster a more conducive environment for academic success.

Education stakeholders view the initiative as a model for other tertiary institutions in Sierra Leone. As the university administration encourages students and staff to take ownership of the new solar ecosystem, the project serves as a clear reference point for how clean energy can be integrated into the core of academic delivery.
