ECSL Chairman seeks unity and cooperation for 2028 elections

Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, the newly appointed Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), earlier today convened a consultative meeting with representatives of all registered political parties, emphasizing the critical need for constructive dialogue, mutual cooperation, and national unity in the lead-up to the 2028 General Elections.

Addressing the political representatives, Chairman Alpha underscored that electoral integrity is a comprehensive process that extends far beyond the polling day itself. He specified that it encompasses the entire electoral cycle, including the efficacy of legal frameworks, the cultivation of stakeholder trust, operational readiness, effective district resolution mechanisms, robust civic education, inclusivity, and transparent processes.

He affirmed that the sustainability of democracy is a shared responsibility, not resting solely on the Commission, but requiring the collective willingness of all political actors to participate constructively in shaping and implementing necessary reforms.

To facilitate this collaboration, Chairman Alpha stated, "The establishment of joint technical working groups, which include party representatives on key reform and operational areas, is paramount."

He further stressed the essential nature of a unified commitment to peaceful engagement and democratic participation, both within the immediate electoral process and in the broader national context.

In an appeal to the attendees, he remarked: "The people of Sierra Leone seek from us not perfection, but leadership; not uniformity, but a decisive unity of purpose. We must leverage this moment not to deepen existing divisions, but to actively rebuild trust. Let us proceed not as adversaries, but as essential partners in a shared national project."

Chairman Alpha urged the political parties to commit to ensuring that the 2028 elections are characterized by high credibility and collective acceptance.

He proffered an invitation to all political parties, without exception, in a spirit of dialogue and mutual respect, concluding with the affirmation that strengthening democratic governance, safeguarding national peace, and upholding the will of the people fundamentally requires comprehensive unity and cooperation among all stakeholders.
