Minister of Energy Cyril Grant attributed persistent national power outages to systemic issues, specifically citing energy theft within the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). This situation is concurrently impacting the government’s capacity to fulfill its financial obligations, including the settlement of outstanding arrears owed to power suppliers.
During an appearance on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM, the Minister formally recognized widespread public concern regarding the prevalence of power interruptions nationwide. He detailed that the instability in electricity supply results from the combined effect of financial pressures across the energy sector and significant distribution system losses associated with illicit activities.
These substantial challenges have placed considerable strain on the power infrastructure, hindering the government's ability to fully meet contractual agreements with electricity providers.
The government is cognisant of public dissatisfaction and is committed to stabilizing the situation despite the inherent sectoral challenges. Mr. Grant underscored the necessity of reinforcing enforcement measures and implementing improved management protocols within the power distribution system to mitigate losses and enhance operational efficiency.
He provided assurance that initiatives are currently being implemented to strengthen EDSA’s operational framework and reduce service disruptions impacting both residential and commercial consumers.
The Minister’s comprehensive remarks highlight the persistent structural and financial challenges facing Sierra Leone’s power sector. Authorities maintain that enhanced enforcement and management practices within EDSA are critical levers for mitigating power outages and ensuring nationwide electricity supply stability.
