The Freetown City Council (FCC) has implemented a new citywide waste management framework, partitioning Freetown into eight distinct operational zones. This initiative aims to bolster sanitation standards and facilitate the enforcement of the newly ratified Solid and Liquid Waste Management By-laws.
At a government press briefing on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, officials announced that the city, spanning from Orugu to Levuma, has been reorganized into these eight operational blocks, with each zone assigned to specific waste collection providers. This segmentation is designed to streamline waste collection processes and enhance compliance.
To support this transition, the FCC is conducting public outreach efforts, including town hall meetings and community engagement initiatives. Households are required to register with their designated service providers. Pricing has been structured for affordability, with rates set at NLe 15 for a 50kg container and NLe 25 for a 100kg container.
Authorities have indicated that failure to register with an approved provider may result in fines of up to NLe 5,000. Enforcement of these by-laws will commence following a period of public education, with support from security agencies as needed.
These reforms are part of a wider strategic effort to improve public sanitation, mitigate environmental health risks, and elevate the city's overall standards.
