Ibrahim Gbla, the Minority Leader of the Freetown City Council (FCC), has announced his intention to formally petition for the appointment of an Acting Mayor. This move follows what Gbla characterizes as a sustained boycott of official duties by Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.
In a recent statement to ECKO Media, Gbla underscored the necessity of consistent political leadership within the FCC. He noted that the council requires active representation to function effectively, particularly given the political composition and the 18 seats held by the party.
“The Freetown City Council is entitled to continuous political leadership,” Gbla asserted.
He stated that should the Mayor’s absence persist through the end of April, he will submit a formal request to the Minister of Local Government and the Vice President to designate an Acting Mayor to oversee council operations.
Gbla further alleged professional misconduct, citing actions that he believes warrant direct intervention from the Ministry of Local Government. While acknowledging that President Julius Maada Bio has provided the Mayor with the autonomy to fulfill her mandate, Gbla maintains that the current situation necessitates administrative review.
Emphasizing the importance of inclusive governance, Gbla argued that city council decisions must reflect a unified political will. He reiterated that the FCC is prepared to pursue all formal administrative channels to resolve the leadership vacuum if the matter remains unaddressed by the end of the month.
These developments highlight escalating tensions between the FCC, the APC, and the Mayor’s office. Local government stakeholders and council members are closely monitoring the situation as the deadline for potential ministerial intervention approaches.
