Freetown Man Sentenced to Two Years for Cemetery Vandalism

Abubakarr Dumbuya, a Labourer, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for malicious damage and theft of property at Kingtom Cemetery. 

The mood of the court was somber and serious as the judge deliberated on the gravity of the crime, reflecting the community’s concern over the disrespect and damage caused to sacred graves. 

The defendant, Abubakarr Dumbuya, appeared subdued and remorseful during the proceedings, aware of the serious implications of his actions. The atmosphere was tinged with a sense of justice being served, emphasizing the importance of upholding respect for property and community values within Freetown.

On Monday, 6th April 2026, at Kingtom Cemetery in the western area of Freetown, Dumbuya maliciously damaged four vault graves, each valued at three thousand Leones, totaling twelve thousand Leones (12,000 Leones).

The crime was committed with the intent to steal the vaults, which are the property of the Freetown City Council. 

When the charge was read and explained, the defendant pleaded not guilty. 

The prosecutor, Inspector Kadie M. Taylor, presented her witnesses and closed her case. The court subsequently withdrew the case file for judgment. 

Magistrate Jah delivered his judgment, stating that he had heard the prosecution witnesses, the facts of the case, and the mitigation plea from the defendant. 

Considering the severity of the conduct and its unacceptable nature within Freetown’s jurisdiction, the magistrate decided not to impose an alternative sentence. 

Instead, he sentenced Dumbuya to two years imprisonment at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown.
