Freetown's Mayor Critiques Judicial Fairness Following Prison Visit to Zainab Sheriff

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has publicly questioned the consistency of Sierra Leone’s legal system following a prison visit to social commentator Zainab Sheriff earlier this week. The Mayor’s remarks have reignited a polarized national debate regarding judicial impartiality, freedom of expression, and the balance between law enforcement and civil liberties.

In a statement released on social media, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described her meeting with Sheriff—who is currently serving a four-year and two-month sentence for convictions related to threatening language and incitement—as a discussion centered on faith, family, and the unique challenges facing women in the country. However, the visit prompted broader concerns from the Mayor regarding what she characterized as the “inconsistent application of the law.”

“Reflecting on her four-year prison sentence, I am once again struck by the inconsistent application of the law,” Aki-Sawyerr stated.

She explicitly criticized what she described as “selective justice,” utilizing the hashtags #SelectiveJustice, #SilencingOfVoices, and #DemocracyInCrisis to underscore her position.

The sentencing of Sheriff has remained a contentious issue in Sierra Leone, with significant public disagreement over the severity of the punishment. While the Mayor did not elaborate on specific legal details, her intervention highlights growing unease among some leaders regarding judicial accountability.

Political analysts suggest that the Mayor's comments are poised to further intensify discourse on democratic accountability in the nation, drawing sharp lines between those who view the conviction as a necessary enforcement of the law and those who perceive it as an infringement on civil expression.
