The Government of Sierra Leone has officially commissioned a new boarding home at Wanjama Government Secondary School for Girls in Pujehun District. This facility is a key component of the Free Education Project’s Boarding Home Initiative, an undertaking of President Julius Maada Bio’s administration implemented by the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).

The primary objective of the boarding home is to enhance educational access for girls in rural areas by providing secure accommodation and a conducive, supportive living environment. This initiative is strategically designed to mitigate significant barriers to education, such as long travel distances, vulnerability to early marriage, and unsafe housing conditions.

The project was originally conceived by Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, now the Chief Minister, during his tenure as Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education. Implementation is being overseen by the Free Education Project Secretariat, led by Ambrose Sesay.

The initiative has garnered crucial support from key international partners, including the World Bank, the European Union, Irish Aid, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), and Education Above All (EAA).

By opening this boarding home at Wanjama Girls’ School, the Government of Sierra Leone reaffirms its profound commitment to promoting gender equality in education and ensuring that all girls are provided with the opportunity to learn, reside safely, and achieve their full potential.
