Government Secures US$2.5 Million Essential Medicines And SRHR Supplies

The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health, has procured US$2.5 million worth of essential medicines and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) commodities to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services nationwide.
The supplies were unveiled in Freetown on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and are currently being prepared for distribution from the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA) stores to health facilities across the country.
The commodities include essential medicines and reproductive health supplies to support healthcare workers in managing critical situations, including Caesarean sections, normal deliveries and other health emergencies.
Minister of Health Austin Demby, PhD, MPH, said the investment reflects the Government’s continued commitment to protecting essential health services for women, children and families.
The procurement comes as Sierra Leone implements the 300 Days of Activism for Triple Zeros, with health authorities identifying high blood pressure, malaria, postpartum bleeding and sepsis or infections among the leading causes of maternal and child deaths.
The Ministry said the new supplies will help health facilities respond to these conditions and provide timely care to women and children.
To strengthen accountability, the distribution will be tracked from the NMSA stores to receiving health facilities to ensure the commodities reach their intended destinations and help prevent potential misuse.
The procurement forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to improve the availability of essential medicines and SRHR commodities and strengthen health outcomes for women, children and families across Sierra Leone.
