Green Scenery Engages Malen Communities on Land Rights and Digital Safety

Green Scenery Sierra Leone, with funding support from Protection International, has engaged members of the Malen Land Affected Owners and Users Association (MALOA) and chiefdom stakeholders in Sahn Town, Pujehun District, to assess how knowledge from a recent Safe Advocacy and Digital Security Training has been shared within the community.

The one-day engagement, held at the Court Barry in Sahn Town, brought together MALOA members, the Town Chief, Green Scenery representatives and the media to reflect on the training and discuss how participants have applied and cascaded the knowledge gained, particularly on safe advocacy and digital security.

Emmanuel Fawundu, Executive Director of the Rural Agency for Community Action Programme (RACAP), a partner of Green Scenery, said the engagement sought to determine whether trained participants had transferred their knowledge and skills to colleagues, community members and other stakeholders.

He said the engagement forms part of Green Scenery’s Strengthening Legal Literacy and Collective Protection for Environmental Rights Defenders in Sierra Leone project, which is being implemented in Upper and Lower Malen.

The session also refreshed participants’ knowledge of Sierra Leone’s Customary Land Rights Act of 2022 and National Land Commission Act of 2022, while addressing land rights, environmental justice, safe advocacy and digital security. Participants also shared experiences, challenges and lessons learned since completing the training.

Fawundu said the Safe Advocacy and Digital Security Training is designed to strengthen the capacity of community-based actors to engage safely in advocacy while protecting their personal information and digital communications from potential risks.

He encouraged MALOA members to continue sharing the knowledge gained with their colleagues and wider communities, particularly on responsible advocacy and safe use of digital platforms.

MALOA Deputy Chairlady 1, Mariama Feika, expressed gratitude to Green Scenery for the engagement, describing it as timely and significant in strengthening community capacity, promoting safe advocacy and ensuring that knowledge from capacity-building programmes reaches more people across Malen Chiefdom.
