Health Ministry Enrols 60 Biomedical Engineers to Boost Healthcare Maintenance

On Thursday, September 3, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mustapha Kabba launched the Ministry of Health’s new mentorship programme on behalf of Minister of Health Austin Demby, PhD, MPH. The inaugural cohort welcomes 60 medical equipment technicians tasked with strengthening the maintenance and overall management of medical devices across Sierra Leone’s healthcare facilities.
To ensure these devices remain fully functional and operate at peak performance, the initiative focuses on building the technical capacity of biomedical engineers. In partnership with the Ministry, UNICEF is supporting the program by procuring essential technical training equipment for this first group of trainees.
At its core, the programme prioritizes patient safety: properly maintained, calibrated, and correctly operated equipment leads to faster, more accurate diagnoses and safer clinical care. Additionally, robust maintenance practices help safeguard the Ministry’s significant financial investments in modern medical technology.
Looking ahead, the mentorship model will pair seasoned local engineers with emerging technicians to transfer vital technical skills, operational standards, and institutional knowledge. By embedding expertise directly within Sierra Leone’s healthcare system, the programme aims to build a lasting culture of sustainability and self-reliance.
