The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has criticized the opposition for taking their grievances over the appointment of Edmond Alpha to the public rather than pursuing legal channels.
Speaking on Africa Young Voices (AYV), Bah said such actions undermine democratic processes and proper scrutiny.
“If you have the opportunity to seek redress from the Supreme Court but choose instead to go to the public, it amounts to emotional blackmail against the government,” Bah stated.
He further explained that the opposition had limited powers to influence the appointment and that their walkout during parliamentary proceedings weakened the democratic process. Bah emphasized that any disagreements should have been presented in Parliament or addressed through the courts.
According to Bah, the government has been consistent in implementing the Agreement for National Unity, and Julius Maada Bio has taken steps to carry out all relevant recommendations, including those related to the appointment of Edmond Alpha.
“They had the opportunity to present their evidence for proper scrutiny, but instead they chose to walk out, undermining the maturity of our democracy,” he added.
Bah’s comments come amid ongoing debates over the appointment of Edmond Alpha and the opposition’s decision to publicly challenge it rather than pursue legal channels.
