Inter-Religious Council Urges Parliament to Reconvene on Constitutional Amendments

The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) has called on Parliament to reconvene and address the ongoing stalemate surrounding proposed constitutional amendments. 

In an official statement issued on August 17, the Council, which represents Christian, Muslim, and other faith bodies, expressed deep concern over the political impasse and urged leaders to prioritize national interest above partisan motives.

While acknowledging the progress made through the Agreement for National Unity and the Tripartite Committee—which generated 80 recommendations to enhance democratic governance—the IRCSL stressed that the Constitution belongs to all citizens. Consequently, any modifications must strictly adhere to established legal procedures rather than political expediency.

Directing its appeal to Parliament, the Judiciary, and President Julius Maada Bio, the faith-based organization urged lawmakers to return to the negotiating table to build a constructive consensus. 

The Council reminded stakeholders that constitutional alterations carry long-term consequences for future generations and must safeguard Sierra Leone's peace, stability, and democratic integrity.
