Kabala Girls Raise Voices Against Child Marriage and FGM

Girls across Koinadugu District gathered in Kabala today to advocate against child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), highlighting the severe impact these practices have on their education, bodily autonomy, and economic independence.

The advocacy symposium, themed "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights," was commemorated on the International Day of the Girl Child. The event was organized by UNFPA Sierra Leone in partnership with Happy Kids and supported by funding from the Government of Iceland.

Bringing together members of local anti-FGM school clubs, Mother Champions, and the FGM Survivors Network, the initiative aims to amplify girls' voices and strengthen community movements. Organizers stressed that early pregnancy and forced marriage continue to drive young girls out of school, entrenching poverty and costing the global economy trillions of dollars.

By equipping girls with knowledge and resources through school clubs such as Gal Pikin Pawa, partners hope to champion every girl's right to learn, lead, and live free from harmful cultural practices.
