Kaifala: ACC Leadership Offers ‘Best Preparation’ for Presidency

Anti-Corruption Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala has positioned his current role at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) as an ideal foundation for the presidency, while maintaining that his immediate priority remains the ongoing fight against corruption in Sierra Leone.

In a recent interview with Truth Media, Kaifala addressed the shifting political landscape following President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s upcoming conclusion of his two-term limit. While he described the President’s tenure as “fantastic,” Kaifala emphasized that the nation’s next phase of development will require a focus on discipline.

“The things that His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio is doing for the country are fantastic, but after him, what this country needs is a leadership that has one word—discipline,” Kaifala stated.

When prompted on whether he intends to succeed the President, Kaifala did not rule out the possibility, though he clarified he is not actively campaigning. "I am a Sierra Leonean. If the lot falls on me to be that leader, then why not?” he said. He noted that his career trajectory, which will mark 20 years at the Bar next year, leaves him open to various senior public service roles, including Attorney-General or Chief Justice, depending on "God’s plan."

Kaifala underscored that his current focus is strictly on his duties at the ACC. “I want to be part of the continued efforts that change the story of Sierra Leone for good. I can’t just come to Truth Media and declare presidency,” he clarified, rejecting the notion that his comments were a formal announcement of a bid.

The Commissioner argued that the challenges inherent in his current office are comparable to the highest levels of governance, providing unique experience to address the country's broader institutional challenges.
