Kono High Court Sentences Man to 215 Years for Brutal Assault and Murder of a Child
In a landmark ruling at the High Court in Koidu City, Amos Aiah Daniel has been handed a cumulative 215-year prison sentence following his conviction for the rape and murder of a young girl. Justice Sntigie Sorie Bangura delivered the severe judgment, signaling a rigorous judicial stance against heinous crimes in the Kono District.
Alongside the primary conviction, the court sentenced the defendant’s mother, Theresa Konomanyie, to 15 years for conspiracy. While she was found guilty of interfering with the investigation, she was acquitted of the murder charge due to a lack of evidence linking her directly to the child's death.
The case pertains to the death of Messie Bangura, a minor who was killed on 4 March 2026. The prosecution established that Daniel lured the victim into his home on Sandor Street, where she was later discovered unconscious by community members.
Despite being rushed to a medical facility, the child succumbed to her injuries shortly after the assault.
Evidence presented during the trial included a confession from Daniel, who admitted to sexually assaulting the girl and suffocating her with a towel to silence her. Medical reports and crime scene data corroborated the confession, leading the court to find his criminal responsibility undeniable.
The court also highlighted Konomanyie’s role in obstructing justice, noting that she attempted to prevent residents from entering the crime scene and intimidated a witness. However, the judge ruled that these actions did not constitute participation in the act of murder itself.
Though defense counsel Alpha Osman Kamara sought leniency by noting the defendants were first-time offenders, Justice Bangura described the acts as "preposterous."
The final sentencing breakdown for Daniel included 120 years for murder, 80 years for wounding with intent, and 15 years for conspiracy.
