Labour Minister Engages Indian Business Council on Workers’ Benefits and Compliance

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Hon. Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has engaged the Indian business community on workers’ benefits, labour law compliance and cooperation between employers and the government.
The discussion took place in Freetown on October 12, 2026, during a courtesy visit by a delegation led by H.L. Balani, President of the Indian Business Council.
Commissioner of Labour Sinneh Bockarie invited the delegation to highlight labour-related challenges affecting their businesses, particularly the application of labour laws and compliance requirements.
Balani expressed the business community’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with the Ministry, emphasising the need for clearer guidance on end-of-service benefits and employers’ legal obligations to prevent non-compliance. He also pledged continued engagement with the Commissioner and other relevant officials.
Koroma stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship between employers and workers, assuring the delegation that the Ministry would mediate workplace disputes fairly, protect both parties’ legitimate interests and promote compliance with labour laws.
He also encouraged businesses to provide feedback on the practical application of labour laws to help inform labour policy development and implementation.
The meeting highlighted the importance of continued cooperation in protecting workers’ rights, addressing workplace concerns and maintaining a stable business environment in Sierra Leone.
