Labour Minister Intervenes in Marampa Mines Redundancies

The Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has intervened in the ongoing corporate restructuring at Marampa Mines Limited to safeguard worker rights under the Employment Act, 2023.
During a high-level engagement held on November 3 at the mining site, Minister Koroma met with company executives, affected workers, union leaders, and representatives from the National Minerals Agency (NMA) to address growing concerns surrounding potential redundancies.
Addressing the gathering, Marampa Mines Holding CEO Paul Lombard explained that adverse economic pressures including escalating global freight charges, soaring fuel expenses, and severe downturns in international iron ore markets necessitated the operational overhaul.
Under the company’s new "Marampa Reset Programme," management aims to rebuild the mining venture into a more resilient enterprise. Early structural adjustments have focused on downsizing expatriate positions to achieve a more equitable ratio between foreign and national employees, Lombard noted.
Going forward, the company pledged to prioritize career advancement, technical skills transfer, and leadership training specifically for Sierra Leonean staff. Management praised the workforce for maintaining calm and constructively participating in dialogue despite the uncertainty.
Minister Koroma assured the workforce that the government remains fully committed to enforcing national labor laws, promising continuous oversight to ensure all severance and restructuring procedures comply rigorously with legal standards.
