The Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) has called on Sierra Leoneans to make informed choices at the ballot box by rejecting tribal, religious, and partisan considerations and instead voting based on competence, performance, and track record.
The appeal was made by CGG Director of Programmes, Sahr Kendema, during an interview with AYV Television, where he stressed that issue-based voting is essential to strengthening democracy and promoting accountable leadership in Sierra Leone.
Kendema urged voters to critically assess candidates based on their achievements and leadership capacity rather than their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.
“We want the people to think critically before voting. Do not vote based on colour, religion or clan; vote based on results,” he said.
He noted that voting based on merit and performance helps to reinforce democratic governance, as it compels elected officials to remain accountable to the electorate.
According to him, issue-based voting also encourages leaders to deliver on their promises, knowing they will ultimately be judged by their performance in office.
Kendema further encouraged citizens to prioritise national development over personal or group interests, stressing that the country’s progress depends on the election of capable and committed leaders.
He also highlighted the importance of civic education in empowering voters to make informed decisions, adding that increased awareness can help reduce the influence of tribalism and other non-issue-based considerations in elections.
The CGG official reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to promoting good governance, democratic accountability, and responsible citizen participation through continuous civic engagement and voter education.
He encouraged citizens to view elections as an opportunity to choose leaders who can deliver meaningful development, uphold democratic values, and advance the national interest.
