Major Renovation Set for Connaught Hospital Operating Theatre
Renovation of the entire Operating Theatre Complex at Connaught Hospital is expected to begin in November 2026, with the Ministry of Health and Mercy Ships working to coordinate the project with the ongoing development of a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
The theatre complex will be completely closed during construction, while the Directorate of Hospital and Ambulance Services (DHAS), Connaught Hospital Management and other stakeholders develop temporary arrangements to maintain essential surgical services. The renovation is expected to take about four months, with a maximum target of five months, according to DHAS Director Ibrahim Foday-Musa.
A coordination meeting held at the Ministry of Health on September 30 reviewed progress on the CSSD project and preparations for the theatre renovation. The CSSD has advanced from architectural and schematic designs to detailed construction documentation, with the proposed prefabricated facility to be built outside the existing theatre complex due to identified water ingress, roofing and drainage challenges. However, the CSSD tendering process remains on hold pending clarification on how it will be integrated with the theatre renovation.
Stakeholders agreed that the theatre renovation scope and design should be finalized with input from surgeons, nurses, anaesthesia providers, hospital management and technical teams. An existing BHI assessment will guide the work, while a physical walkthrough of the theatre complex will assess surgical workflow, infection prevention, patient movement and equipment placement.
DHAS and Connaught Hospital Management are also expected to determine how the CSSD and theatre projects can be implemented during a single theatre closure period.
The meeting concluded with plans to finalize designs and technical documents, clarify funding and procurement responsibilities, and develop a joint activity tracker outlining responsibilities, deliverables and timelines.
The coordinated projects are expected to improve infection prevention, surgical safety and the efficiency of surgical services at Connaught Hospital.
