Minister Condemns "Unacceptable" Maternal Death; Investigation Launched at Kambia

The Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, has emphatically condemned preventable maternal deaths as "completely unacceptable" following the reported death of a 30-year-old woman at Kambia Government Hospital, an incident that has prompted a formal investigation.

The Ministry of Health was alerted by circulating social media reports concerning the death of Kadiatu Pompay Kamara, who allegedly died from complications arising from a surgical procedure. Reports claim the procedure was performed by a Community Health Officer (CHO) without medical doctor supervision, leading to complications that were reportedly mismanaged.

The Ministry extended condolences to the bereaved family and confirmed a thorough investigation is underway to establish the facts. Dr. Demby stated, "If the allegations are proven to be true, then such preventable maternal deaths are completely unacceptable."

While acknowledging the incident's severity, the Ministry situated the event within broader systemic challenges. It clarified that Kambia District does currently have a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist serving as Medical Superintendent, and noted the district’s prior maternal death reduction success.

Addressing the use of CHOs for surgery, the Ministry explained this is an interim measure in settings with limited surgical staff but stressed the critical need for close supervision. The Ministry highlighted ongoing investments in healthcare human resources, including over 120 medical residents in training, and reaffirmed its commitment to sustained reforms and stronger oversight to eliminate preventable maternal mortality.
