Minister Urges Sustainable Funding Plan for Sierra Leone Broadcaster

Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education Bockarie Abdel Aziz Bawoh has called for a reliable, long-term funding framework for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), emphasizing that adequate financing is essential for the public broadcaster to fulfill its national mandate.

Speaking on Thursday at a national conference titled “Ring-Fencing Funding for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation,” Bawoh set the stage for discussions co-organized by the Ministry and the Corporation to address financial sustainability and the future of public media in Sierra Leone.

Bawoh stressed that securing long-term resources for SLBC is vital for democratic governance, peacebuilding, and informed citizen participation. Referencing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, he highlighted public broadcasting’s role in delivering credible news, civic education, and essential public-interest content nationwide.

While acknowledging the commercial pressures facing modern media, the Deputy Minister pointed out initiatives like the International Forum for Public Interest Media to support journalism. However, he maintained that national broadcasters require special protection from financial constraints to prioritize public service over profit.

The conference serves as the launchpad for ongoing national dialogue. Bawoh urged stakeholders to establish concrete funding arrangements that preserve SLBC’s operational independence, financial stability, and public mandate.
