Ministry of Education Strengthens Ties with Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood

The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has initiated a strategic dialogue with the newly elected national executive of the Sierra Leone Muslim Brotherhood (SLMB) to address critical issues in faith-based education.

Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, met with the SLMB leadership on Thursday, July 23, 2026. During the engagement, the Ministry acknowledged the SLMB as the country’s oldest indigenous Islamic mission, established in 1959. Minister Sackey highlighted the mission’s decades-long contribution to national development, noting that the organization manages hundreds of government-approved teachers across all 16 districts.

“This is not a small mission. This is a pillar of our education system that had gone quiet for too long,” Minister Sackey stated, emphasizing the necessity of a closer working relationship.

The discussions covered several pressing challenges within the sector, including:

• Arabic Education: Addressing concerns regarding the deployment of foreign Arabic teachers.

• School Management: Resolving issues surrounding mission lands, school board operations, and the management of mission schools.

• Teacher Transfers: Addressing complaints regarding the transfer of teachers from mission schools without prior consultation with mission authorities.

The meeting signals a renewed effort by the Ministry to collaborate directly with key education stakeholders. According to the Ministry, the partnership is designed to move beyond ceremonial interactions and build a functional, collaborative relationship to improve education delivery for pupils in SLMB classrooms nationwide.

This engagement is part of the Ministry’s broader initiative to strengthen partnerships with faith-based organizations and other stakeholders to support the delivery of quality education across Sierra Leone.
