Myk Berewa, Director of Communications in the Office of the President, has stated that the kush crisis in Sierra Leone did not begin under President Julius Maada Bio. Berewa noted that kush was already present in the country as far back as 2016, during the tenure of the previous government.
He added that the former administration left not only economic challenges but also divided youth groups tight networks that have contributed to the spread of drug culture and the instability observed today.
In a social media post, Berewaaccused the opposition of overlooking its contribution to the drug epidemic:
“They claimed we weren’t doing anything about Kush, but they left out that it was all part of the mess they created and left. Kush showed up in Salone in 2016. It wasn’t just austerity they dumped on us; they also left us with cliques.”
Berewa’s comments were made in response to claims that the Bio administration has done little to address the proliferation of kush. He highlighted that the government has taken decisive action, including declaring substance abuse a national emergency, establishing a Presidential Task Force, and implementing a five-part strategy targeting prevention, care and treatment, social support, enforcement, and community engagement.
While acknowledging that the crisis did not start under the Bio administration, Berewa emphasized that it is now the government’s responsibility to tackle and resolve the issue.
