A major step toward enhancing financial inclusion and improving the safety of cocoa farmers has been launched in Sierra Leone’s Eastern Region, with a new digital financial initiative aimed at transforming how farmers receive and manage their earnings.
The initiative was unveiled during a stakeholder engagement held in Kenema, where a joint team from Afrimoney Sierra Leone, Tas Store, and master farmers primarily from Kenema and Kailahun convened to discuss the rollout of the new system.
The digital solution is designed to address longstanding challenges faced by farmers, particularly the risks associated with carrying large sums of cash after selling cocoa produce. By leveraging mobile-based financial services, the initiative seeks to provide a safer and more efficient alternative for transactions.
Stakeholders highlighted that the platform will also significantly reduce transportation costs and delays, enabling farmers to receive payments more quickly while minimizing exposure to theft and other security concerns.
Representatives from Afrimoney and Tas Store reaffirmed their commitment to simplifying digital financial services for rural communities. They emphasized that the system is being tailored to ensure accessibility, ease of use, and inclusivity for farmers regardless of their level of digital literacy.
Farmers who attended the meeting welcomed the initiative, noting that it has the potential to modernize financial practices within the agricultural sector while improving convenience and financial security.
The rollout marks a significant shift toward the adoption of secure, technology-driven financial solutions for farmers in the Eastern Region, aligning with broader efforts to promote digital inclusion and economic empowerment in rural Sierra Leone.
