New Policies Proposed to Strengthen Sierra Leone’s Public, Community Media

BBC Media Action and the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) have called for reforms to strengthen Sierra Leone’s media sector, with particular emphasis on public broadcasting and community media.

The two organisations made the call through the EU-funded MEDIA Project, where they presented two proposed policy documents to government officials and key media stakeholders for consideration.

One of the proposed policies seeks to strengthen the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) by enhancing its independence and improving its financial sustainability as a public service broadcaster.

The organisations also presented a proposed national policy for community media, aimed at protecting community media organisations and creating greater opportunities for local voices to be heard across the country.

According to the organisations, the proposed reforms are intended to address key challenges within the media sector and provide a stronger framework for the development of public and community broadcasting.

The reforms are expected to contribute to a more independent, sustainable and inclusive media sector in Sierra Leone, while strengthening the ability of public and community media organisations to serve citizens across the country.
