UNECA Backs Sierra Leone’s Health Financing and Reform Efforts

Sierra Leone and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) have strengthened cooperation on health financing and strategic health-sector reforms following a high-level meeting between Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby and UNECA Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support Mama Keita on Aug. 26, 2026.

Dr. Demby highlighted progress under the Ministry of Health’s 300 Days of Activism, reporting a 32 percent reduction in maternal deaths, an 11 percent reduction in child deaths and a 92 percent increase in the identification and reaching of zero-dose children who have not received routine vaccinations.

The Minister stressed the need for sustained investment and collaboration in health financing and reliable health information systems, describing both as key priorities for strengthening healthcare planning and delivery.

UNECA commended Sierra Leone’s progress and expressed interest in supporting the country’s health financing strategy. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to improving access to quality healthcare, particularly for women, children and communities across the country.

The engagement provides a platform for continued Sierra Leone-UNECA cooperation as the government advances health-sector reforms, strengthens financing and information systems, and works to improve healthcare outcomes nationwide.
