Njala University Engages Pujehun Stakeholders Over Proposed Campus

Njala University has concluded a stakeholder engagement in Pujehun Town as part of ongoing efforts to explore the establishment of a university campus in the district.

The engagement, held at the Pujehun District Council Conference Hall, brought together representatives of Njala University, Paramount Chiefs, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, educationists, civil society organisations, women, youth, students, the media and other key stakeholders.

Njala University Registrar, Dr. Muniru Jalloh, said the engagement was aimed at expanding tertiary education opportunities closer to Sierra Leoneans while giving stakeholders an opportunity to share their views, concerns and recommendations on the proposed campus.

Chairing the meeting, Secretary to the President Alhaji Barba Brima Fortune expressed support for the initiative, noting that a Njala University campus in Pujehun would improve access to tertiary education for young people in the district and neighbouring communities. He said the campus could also contribute to human capital development, skills acquisition, employment and socio-economic transformation.

Discussions focused on key issues including land, infrastructure, community participation and the need for collaboration among Njala University, the Government, Pujehun District Council, traditional authorities and local communities.

Njala University Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Alhaji Bashiru Koroma, emphasized the importance of continued consultations as the university assesses the feasibility of the proposed campus and the level of stakeholder support.

Professor Koroma also announced that the university plans to open admissions for the 2026/2027 academic year at the proposed Njala University Pujehun Campus, with programmes expected to cover agriculture, education, aquaculture, medicine, waste management and Information and Communications Technology, among others. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes are also expected to be offered through the Community Education Centre and Pujehun Technical College.

Pujehun District Council Chairman Foday K. Rogers welcomed the engagement and called for sustained dialogue and concrete follow-up actions to ensure the proposed campus becomes a reality, reaffirming the council’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

District Mammy Queen for Pujehun, Madam Mamawa Kaikai, also welcomed the proposed campus on behalf of women in Wanjama. She said the initiative would help address challenges faced by students who travel outside the district for tertiary education, including accommodation, transportation and feeding costs.

The proposed Njala University campus is expected to strengthen access to higher education in Pujehun and contribute to the district’s long-term development through education, research, agriculture and community development.
