Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has strongly advocated for the exclusive use of the newly renovated Sierra Leone National Stadium for sporting events, rather than the entertainment shows that have become prevalent in recent years.
Dr. Abdulai highlighted that the stadium's design, especially its natural grass playing surface, is ill-suited for the heavy equipment typically associated with musical concerts and other non-sporting events.
He cautioned that continued improper use could quickly deteriorate both the structure and the playing surface, thereby undermining the investment made in its renovation.
Dr. Abdulai expressed regret over the stadium's transformation into an entertainment venue, which he believes has compromised its structural integrity over time, given that the stadium was not originally designed for musical events.
In an effort to protect the stadium and enhance government revenue, the NSA Director also announced plans to outsource stadium management to one or two private entities upon completion. He believes this strategy will prevent misuse by public officials and their relatives, a recurring issue for the venue.
Dr. Abdulai nostalgically recalled the stadium's former glory, particularly its powerful sound system that once allowed clear audio to be heard outside the venue, contrasting with its current neglected state.
He concluded by encouraging event organizers to consider alternative venues, such as the artificial turf fields at Approved School or Lumley, allowing the national stadium to fulfill its intended purpose: promoting sports development and hosting international competitions.
