Opposition Challenges Government on U.S. Travel Ban

Sierra Leone’s Chief Whip of the Opposition, Honourable Abdul Karim Kamara, has publicly challenged the government regarding the recent U.S. travel ban, questioning its consistency with President Julius Maada Bio’s stated commitment to elevating the nation’s international standing.

In a public statement, Hon. Kamara directly referenced a campaign promise, asking, “Mr President, you promised to build our international reputation. Is the travel ban part of it?”

These remarks follow a U.S. presidential proclamation, signed on 16 December 2025 and effective January 2026, which imposes a full entry suspension for both immigrant and nonimmigrant travel for Sierra Leonean nationals. The ban has generated considerable public and political concern over its impact on citizens with plans to study, work, or reunite with family in the United States.

Hon. Kamara’s intervention intensifies opposition scrutiny of the government’s international relations and immigration policies. In response, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced it is engaging U.S. authorities and has requested public patience while diplomatic consultations proceed.

Hon. Kamara emphasized the urgency for the government to demonstrate how it will safeguard the interests of Sierra Leoneans and uphold international commitments.
