The Honorable Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has formally addressed a correspondence to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. The communication outlines grave concerns regarding escalating international reports that associate Sierra Leone with global drug trafficking operations and transnational organized crime.
In the open letter, dated May 10, 2026, Hon. Kargbo emphasized the alarming frequency with which Sierra Leone is cited in international law enforcement briefings and investigative journalism related to narcotics trade.
He noted that over the past two years, the nation's name has increasingly surfaced in high-level discussions concerning cocaine distribution networks, posing a significant risk to Sierra Leone’s diplomatic reputation and national security framework.
A primary focus of the inquiry is the recent interception of the vessel MV Arconian by Spanish maritime authorities. The vessel, which reportedly departed from Freetown, was discovered to be transporting over 30 tonnes of cocaine. Citing reports from international outlets such as El País, Hon. Kargbo highlighted that the seizure resulted from sophisticated intelligence sharing among global law enforcement agencies.
Further reports indicate that the vessel also contained concealed weaponry and ammunition, accompanied by armed personnel. This discovery has prompted serious questions regarding the efficacy of Sierra Leone’s maritime surveillance and port security protocols.
The correspondence also references intelligence linking the region to notorious criminal syndicates, including the "Mocro Mafia," and high-profile fugitives such as Jos Leijdekkers. Hon. Kargbo warned that these associations could compromise national sovereignty and deter international economic investment.
Additional concerns were raised regarding suspicious activities linked to Sierra Leonean travel and diplomatic channels in Europe and Asia. The Leader of the Opposition asserted that these developments suggest a systemic vulnerability rather than isolated criminal acts, necessitating a robust and transparent governmental response.
Hon. Kargbo urged the Executive to implement immediate measures to fortify national security systems and improve institutional accountability. He cautioned that a lack of decisive action could exacerbate international scrutiny and cause lasting damage to the nation’s global standing.
Beyond the geopolitical implications, the letter addressed the domestic crisis of synthetic drug abuse, particularly "Kush," describing it as a critical public health emergency. The Honorable Member concluded by calling for coordinated national leadership to mitigate these escalating threats to the Republic.
