Opposition Members of Parliament have officially resumed their legislative responsibilities following a series of strategic mediation initiatives led by the Rt. Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, Speaker of Parliament.
During the session on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Speaker formally welcomed the return of the Opposition. He emphasized their electoral mandate and underscored the importance of their active participation in the institutional framework of national governance.
The Speaker encouraged robust engagement in parliamentary discourse, asserting that the representation of constituent interests is paramount. He urged members to utilize the parliamentary chamber as a transparent forum for advocacy and deliberation.
The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, expressed his gratitude to the Speaker for his instrumental role in facilitating the Opposition's return to the House.
Hon. Kargbo noted that the Speaker orchestrated several high-level consultative meetings with Opposition members and acted as a liaison for productive dialogue with the President to address the political impasse.
"We wish to formally extend our appreciation for your leadership, Mr. Speaker," stated Hon. Kargbo. "Your role as a conduit for executive engagement resulted in a highly productive meeting with the President. This exemplary leadership is deeply valued by our members."
Additionally, Hon. Kargbo advocated for the full implementation of the Communique governing their return. This includes the formal presentation of the Agreement for National Unity and the constitution of a committee to provide oversight for the Elections Management Body.
Speaker Thomas acknowledged these requirements and assured the House that administrative steps would proceed upon the return of Government Business Leaders, who are currently fulfilling official obligations abroad.
He concluded by reaffirming that the necessary procedural actions concerning the agreement would be addressed imminently to maintain legislative stability and foster ongoing political dialogue.
