A commercial tricycle rider who was taken into police custody following a public altercation with a uniformed Sierra Leone Police officer in the West End of Freetown has been released, while the officer involved is now under investigation by the Complaints, Discipline and Internal Investigations Department (CDIID).
The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 15, sparked widespread public concern after a video circulated showing the officer physically assaulting the Keke rider during a heated confrontation.
According to eyewitness accounts, the dispute began as a verbal exchange between the officer and the rider while traffic was reportedly flowing freely on the road. The argument quickly escalated, with both men allegedly exchanging insults before the officer, dressed in full police uniform, slapped the rider across the face.
Following the incident, the Keke rider was reportedly detained by the police, a move that drew criticism from members of the public who questioned the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Sources have now confirmed that the rider has been released from custody, while the police officer involved has been referred to the CDIID for investigation into allegations of misconduct and abuse of authority.
The incident attracted a crowd of bystanders at the scene, many of whom condemned the officer’s conduct and called for greater professionalism and accountability within the police force.
Earlier, the Minister of Internal Affairs acknowledged government awareness of the matter and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be carried out to ensure justice is served.
The outcome of the CDIID investigation is expected to determine whether disciplinary action will be taken against the officer.
