Isata Coomber, a Sierra Leonean social media activist, has initiated a campaign advocating for the legalization of polygamy across all religious communities.
Coomber, who describes herself as a "parliamentarian for men," is resolutely committed to advancing her campaign to completion.
She highlights several potential advantages of promoting polygamy, such as addressing a declining male population, fostering sisterly relationships among co-wives, reducing infidelity, enhancing economic stability by minimizing male promiscuity, and decreasing the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases.
Coomber has expressed disappointment over the public's opposition to her campaign, asserting that her intentions are sincere.
Isata Nagiesa Coomber, reportedly serving as a Public Relations Officer at the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), has conveyed frustration and dismay at the public's lack of support and criticism.
In one of her videos, she shared two "success stories" of men whose wives, influenced by Coomber's views, consented to their husbands taking additional wives.
It is widely recognized that certain religions, including Islam—one of Sierra Leone's predominant faiths—allow polygamy, provided the male spouse can equally support all wives. However, Christianity, particularly of the New Testament tradition, prohibits multiple wives, considering it adultery and potentially leading to bigamy, a serious offense in Sierra Leone.
Given the uncertainty surrounding her religious affiliation, many have questioned whether her campaign is motivated by her stated reasons or by personal motivations, particularly in light of her strong desire for support and the absence of a wedding ring.
