PPRC Justifies Decision Not to Sanction SLPP Over Bio’s Comments in Bonthe

The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has explained why it did not sanction the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) over remarks made by President Julius Maada Bio in Bonthe District concerning the main opposition party.

Speaking on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM, Lucien Momoh, Director of Training and External Relations at the PPRC, said the Commission reviewed the matter and concluded that the statement did not meet the threshold required for sanctions.

“We did not fine the SLPP over President Bio’s remarks in Bonthe District regarding the main opposition party because the statement did not meet the threshold for punishment,” Momoh stated.

He explained that members of the Commission deliberated on the issue before reaching a decision not to impose sanctions on the ruling party.

According to him, the remarks were assessed within the framework of the Commission’s regulations and procedures, which ultimately determined that disciplinary action was not warranted.

Momoh emphasized that the PPRC remains committed to fairness and due process in handling matters involving all registered political parties in the country.

The issue has generated public debate following concerns raised over comments made by President Bio during political engagements in Bonthe District.

The Commission’s clarification comes amid ongoing discussions on political speech and accountability, with the PPRC maintaining that its decision was based on an internal assessment of whether the remarks met the required threshold for sanctions.
