Presidential spokesman Warns Opposition Leader Could Lose Parliamentary Seat

Presidential Spokesman Alpha Khan has cautioned Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition, to act within the legal framework of Parliament, warning that failure to do so could put his parliamentary seat at risk.

Speaking on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM on Tuesday, Khan emphasized that Kargbo, as a Member of Parliament and party leader, has the mandate to raise concerns and make demands through established parliamentary procedures.

“He shouldn’t follow those who do not understand the Constitution. And it may lead to him losing his seat,” Khan stated.

The warning comes amid rising political tensions following threats by the All People’s Congress (APC) to withdraw its Members of Parliament and other elected officials from governance, including parliamentary sittings, in protest against the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).

The APC has also signaled the possibility of boycotting parliamentary activities, citing concerns over fairness and legitimacy in the electoral process. Khan urged opposition leaders to pursue their grievances through lawful means, stressing the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions to avoid legal or political consequences.

Khan’s remarks underscore the government’s position that while political disagreements are inherent in a democracy, all parliamentary actors must operate within the bounds of the law to safeguard the integrity of Sierra Leone’s legislative institutions.
