The All People’s Congress (APC) has announced its intention to organize a peaceful nationwide protest should Edmond Sylvester Alpha remain in his position as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).
During a press conference at the party's headquarters in Freetown, the APC Secretary General emphasized that the party will not validate a system it deems compromised. While expressing a commitment to represent the public interest, the leadership also indicated a willingness to engage in good-faith dialogue to resolve the impasse.
Mr. Alpha's appointment was formalized on 20 February 2026 via a public notice from the Office of the President. President Julius Maada Bio cited Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution as the legal basis for the appointment.
The APC contends that this leadership transition could significantly erode public trust in the electoral framework. This ultimatum underscores intensifying political friction as the nation approaches its next electoral cycle.
Observers note that these developments reflect a volatile political climate, suggesting that sustained multi-stakeholder engagement is essential to safeguard the integrity of Sierra Leone's democratic institutions.
