The Government of Sierra Leone is facing increasing pressure to provide an official statement on the current location of President Julius Maada Bio, amidst growing regional instability and reports that he may be abroad.
Opposition political figures and concerned citizens are demanding greater transparency. Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, a former Attorney General and presidential aspirant for the All People's Congress (APC), voiced serious concern on social media regarding unverified reports suggesting President Bio is in a "difficult situation abroad." Kamara emphasized that the government's silence on the matter is unacceptable, stating,
"Reports that President Bio is in a difficult situation abroad are deeply troubling... Govt must clarify his location and condition. The public deserves transparency."
He later added a warning about the consequences of ignoring repeated advisories, which aligns with public speculation linking the President’s movements to the ongoing military conflict in the Gulf region involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Similarly, opposition politician Sylvia Olayinka Blyden called for clarity, noting conflicting reports suggesting the President may be in Lebanon for medical treatment rather than in Dubai, where he is also rumored to be stranded. She explicitly distanced herself from possessing any insider information regarding the President’s travel.
Official sources have confirmed that President Bio continues to conduct diplomatic engagements. The Emirates News Agency reported that he spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on March 2, during which he condemned recent Iranian attacks and affirmed Sierra Leone's solidarity with the UAE. However, these reports have not specified his physical location.
The lack of a formal statement from either the Government of Sierra Leone or the Office of the President has intensified public and political concern. Stakeholders are urgently calling for transparency to maintain confidence in national leadership during a period of heightened regional uncertainty.
As of the time of reporting, no public statement has been issued addressing the speculation surrounding President Bio’s current travel status or whereabouts.
