Sierra Leone Energy Sector Set for Major Boost as MCC Approves $480 Million Grant

Sierra Leone’s energy sector is set for significant transformation following the approval of a $480 million grant by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, alongside an additional $14.2 million contribution from the Government of Sierra Leone.

The investment is expected to expand access to affordable and reliable electricity for approximately 4.6 million people across the country, while strengthening the overall performance of the national power system.

Speaking during a ceremony held at the MCC’s new office facility along Leicester Peak in Freetown, MCC Deputy Vice President for Africa, Alicia Robinson Morgan, said the compact is designed to strengthen Sierra Leone’s electricity sector through improved infrastructure, governance, and financial sustainability.

She explained that the programme will focus on expanding electricity access, reducing technical and commercial losses in the power sector, and improving the reliability and safety of the national distribution network.

Robinson Morgan further noted that the initiative is expected to support regional electricity trading through the West Africa Power Pool while also encouraging private sector investment in key sectors such as mining, industry, and services.

According to her, a more stable and predictable energy supply will help create a conducive business environment capable of attracting both local and international investors, including American companies interested in opportunities in Sierra Leone.

She also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the MCC, the Millennium Challenge Account–Sierra Leone (MCA-SL), and government ministries in shaping a compact aimed at delivering long-term development outcomes.

The event formed part of activities marking Freedom250, commemorating 250 years of American independence and highlighting historical innovations in electricity and technology.

Reaffirming MCC’s commitment to Sierra Leone’s development, Robinson Morgan said the programme is expected to power homes, strengthen businesses, and create new economic opportunities for millions of Sierra Leoneans.
