The Government of Sierra Leone is supporting a new energy partnership between Akuna Group and Octopus Energy to build the country’s first wind farm on Sherbro Island.
The project, expected to be completed by March 2026, will mark Octopus Energy’s first renewable energy farm in Africa. The UK-based company currently operates more than 350 clean energy farms worldwide.
The initiative combines wind turbines, solar panels, and battery storage to supply electricity to over 1,500 homes on the island. The government has been involved since the early planning stages and continues to work closely with both partners to ensure the project’s success and future expansion.
The partnership began when Akuna Group, led by Idris Elba, and Octopus Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Since then, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh and Octopus Energy CEO Zoisa North-Bond have maintained active engagement, meeting at several international events including Global Citizen Now in the United States, the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, and the Sierra Leone Investment Forum.
Sherbro Island was chosen as the launch site for this clean energy initiative. With the necessary licenses and agreements, the government and its partners plan to extend similar renewable energy projects to other parts of Sierra Leone.
The Government of Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Akuna Group and Octopus Energy in their efforts to deliver sustainable power solutions and promote skills development across the country.
