Presidential Spokesman Calls for Mercy and Unity Ahead of ECOWAS Summit

Presidential Spokesman Dr. Alhaji Alpha Kanu has called on the nation to embrace a balance between justice and mercy, framing these values as essential to the country’s ongoing peace, democracy, and future stability.

Dr. Kanu made the appeal during a special edition of the Government Weekly Press Conference held at the Miatta Civic Centre on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Addressing journalists and key stakeholders, the spokesman emphasized that his message was intended as a reflection on the character of the nation rather than a strictly political statement.

“Justice built our Republic. Mercy can strengthen it. And unity will secure it for generations yet unborn,”

Dr. Kanu declared during his address.

Reflecting on Sierra Leone’s history, Dr. Kanu highlighted the emergence of leadership across generations during critical periods of uncertainty. He specifically pointed to the record of President Julius Maada Bio, citing his contributions to national peace efforts during the civil war and his historic decision as Head of State in 1996 to oversee the transition to a democratically elected civilian government.

Dr. Kanu asserted that the principles of constitutional governance and national unity remain central to the country’s democratic journey. He argued that achieving lasting peace requires more than just accountability; it necessitates a commitment to healing and mutual understanding.
