SLTU Awaits Government Salary Offer

The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) is currently awaiting an official salary offer from the government after successfully wrapping up discussions on non-salary components of the proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

According to a press statement released by the Union on November 4, 2026, negotiating panels from both the government and the union agreed on September 28 to divide the CBA negotiations into two distinct phases: non-salary issues and salary structures.

The non-salary package was finalized during a key session on October 19. The resolved terms address critical working conditions, including teacher leave, promotion and transfer protocols, redundancy compensation, workload and class size limits, termination guidelines, grievance resolution procedures, end-of-service benefits, retirement, and pensions.

With non-salary matters established, state bodies—including the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the Teaching Service Commission, and the Wages and Compensation Commission—are reviewing the SLTU's proposed salary adjustments ahead of upcoming joint panel talks.

Regarding its financial demands, the SLTU emphasized that its proposal focuses heavily on harmonizing wage scales across the teaching workforce rather than simply requesting a flat percentage raise.

Union leadership expressed confidence that negotiations will conclude before the end of 2026, enabling the agreed salary figures to be incorporated into the 2027 national budget.

In the interim, the SLTU has appealed to teachers nationwide to remain patient while negotiators work to formalize a final agreement covering improved pay and updated terms of service.
