Speaker Thomas: Strengthening Legislative Cooperation for Regional Challenges

Speaker of the Sierra Leone Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has called for deepened legislative collaboration and parliamentary ties between Sierra Leone and neighbouring Guinea, emphasizing the critical role of inter-parliamentary cooperation in addressing regional challenges.

Delivering a goodwill address on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the State Opening of the 10th Legislature of the 5th Republic of Guinea in Conakry, Speaker Thomas urged both national assemblies to establish structured exchanges between legislative committees and align on best parliamentary practices.

Addressing lawmakers in Conakry, Thomas highlighted that key issues confronting West Africa—including economic reform, regional security threats, climate change, and sustainable development—demand unified cross-border strategies rather than isolated national measures.

“Stronger parliamentary engagement is essential for building transparent, accountable, and inclusive democratic institutions,” Speaker Thomas stated, adding that enhanced bilateral relations will yield tangible benefits for citizens of both West African nations.

Understanding the shared cultural heritage and historical bonds uniting the two countries, Thomas formally extended congratulations to Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya on his election victory and to Dr. Dansa Kourouma on assuming the leadership of Guinea’s National Assembly.

He also offered warm greetings to the people of Guinea following their recent independence anniversary celebrations, expressing gratitude for the hospitality extended to the visiting Sierra Leonean delegation.

Concluding his speech, Speaker Thomas reiterated the commitment of the Parliament of Sierra Leone to advancing democratic governance, constructive dialogue, and strategic partnership across the sub-region.
