Stats SL Receives 25,000 Tablets Ahead of December Census

Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has received 25,000 branded tablets, power banks, and protective cases at Tower Hill in Freetown as preparations intensify for the December 2026 Population and Housing Census.
The consignment, fully procured with funding from the Government of Sierra Leone, brings the total number of census tablets to 29,000 following the delivery of 4,000 units in 2025 for national cartographic mapping. This support aims to strengthen the national statistical system and ensure a transition to a digital census data-collection process.
The tablets will serve as the primary electronic tools for field enumerators to capture, validate, and transmit demographic and socio-economic information directly from households. Built-in validation features are designed to help enumerators and supervisors identify and address errors or inconsistencies on site, significantly improving efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness while eliminating paper questionnaires.
Speaking during the official handover, Dr. Colins Opiyo (Chief Technical Adviser for the 2026 Census), Samuel Ansumana (Director of Communication and Public Relations), and Moses Johnson (Officer-in-Charge of Operations and Logistics) described the arrival of the equipment as a major milestone in technical and operational readiness.
Stats SL emphasized its commitment to delivering a census that is credible, accurate, reliable, and inclusive. The resulting data will support government planning, development programmes, resource allocation, and evidence-based policy decision-making across Sierra Leone.
The institution appealed to the public to cooperate with census field personnel and provide accurate information, stressing that public participation is vital to ensure every household and individual is properly counted.
Census Night is scheduled for December 1, 2026, with nationwide enumeration commencing on December 2, 2026, under the official campaign slogan: “Census 2026 — Leh Den Kont You Ooh!”
