Supreme Court Grants ILRAJ Entry into Constitutional Amendment Proceeding

The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone has permitted the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) to join proceedings on interpreting the newly passed Constitutional Amendment Bill.
Chief Justice Komba Kamanda approved the application following arguments from ILRAJ counsel Basita Michaels Esq., who requested that the organization join as an amicus curiae, or "friend of the court."
Michaels emphasized that ILRAJ remains neutral, aiming solely to offer independent legal analysis to aid the Court in resolving the key constitutional questions.
Chief Justice Kamanda highlighted that amicus status requires applicants to prove how their expertise adds distinct value to the judicial process.
Ultimately, the Chief Justice ruled in favor of ILRAJ, citing the interests of fairness and justice.
With approval granted, ILRAJ submits formal, independent legal perspectives as the Court continues its review of the amendment.
The ongoing proceedings stem from Parliament's recent passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill and its subsequent referral to the Supreme Court for judicial review.
