Tramadol, Cocaine, and Cannabis Destroyed in Major TOCU Operation

The Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) has destroyed a large quantity of seized substances, including Tramadol 500mg, cocaine, Kush, and Cannabis Sativa, during a major crackdown on illegal drugs at its Hastings headquarters.

The operation, conducted in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Pharmacy Board, the Judiciary, and the Office of National Security (ONS), aims to curb drug trafficking and curb substance abuse nationwide.

Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Michael Laggah, Head of TOCU, explained that the destroyed items also included chemicals used in Kush production, expired medications, and other related narcotics. “These consignments were intercepted through the diligent efforts of TOCU personnel and partner agencies,” he said, stressing the government’s commitment to dismantling illegal drug networks.

CSP Laggah also highlighted trends in the types of drugs circulating in the country, noting that synthetic opioids such as Tramadol are increasingly being abused, while traditional substances like cocaine and Cannabis Sativa continue to fuel organized crime.

Representing the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Dr Martin Senessie, Director of Operations, reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to tracking down traffickers and supporting TOCU’s anti-narcotics operations.

Mr Andrew Jayah KaiKai, Executive Director of the NDLEA, described the destruction exercise as symbolic of the country’s determination to combat drug-related crimes and reduce public health risks associated with substance abuse.

Authorities said the operation is part of a broader strategy to monitor, intercept, and destroy illicit drugs, protecting communities from harmful substances while gathering intelligence on trafficking trends across Sierra Leone.
