Hundreds of public servants from key government institutions in Sierra Leone took part in a symbolic health walk in Freetown on Saturday, marking the start of a three-day celebration of World Public Service Day organized by the Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU).
Participants came from institutions including the Ministry of Public Administration and Political Affairs, Public Service Commission, Cabinet Secretariat, Human Resource Management Office, and Wages and Compensation Commission.
The walk began at the Youyi Building and ended at Aberdeen Beach, promoting unity, teamwork, wellness, and inter-agency collaboration. Officials said the event also provided an opportunity for staff to interact outside the workplace and strengthen professional relationships while reflecting on their shared responsibility to improve public service delivery.
Participants described the initiative as a reminder that effective public service depends on institutional cooperation, as Sierra Leone continues reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and governance across the public sector.
The three-day programme will continue with a symposium on public sector development and service delivery, followed by an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding public servants for excellence and dedication.
World Public Service Day, observed globally on June 23 and established by the United Nations in 2002, highlights the role of public servants in delivering essential services such as healthcare, education, security, and social welfare, while promoting professionalism and innovation in governance.
The celebration is expected to conclude with renewed commitments to improving service delivery, accountability, and institutional performance across Sierra Leone’s public sector.
