- Air Force wins unity Volleyball National Championship in Port Loko
The Air force Volleyball team from Bo has defeated their main challenger Forcians Volleyball Club in a best of three games to win the Unity Volleyball Championship in Port Loko on Sunday 30th April , 2023. Head Coach of the Forcians Volleyball male team Ansumana Bangura, has told this medium that his team has played well but they were not fortune enough to grab the championship against Air force. Bangura said his players , trained well for the championship and they did what was expected of them , but Air force prevented from reaching a huge milestone in the history of Volleyball in the Country. Air force Volleyball Club , made good account of themselves, as winning a final of such magnitude was daunting but they emerged as Champions due to hard work , dedication and team organization throughout the match. When asked about the next steps of Forcians , Bangura noted that the prospect of winning subsequent championship is imminent. From Bangura's optimism , it is very likely that they are on the verge of giving Volleyball of a lifeline of reaching new heights ahead of Important International Competitions. Meanwhile, team Air force will celebrate the triumph in days and weeks to come, possibly a tour around Bo City to amplify the greatness of winning a National Championship among the top sides in Volleyball.
- Sierra Leone's Hassan Arouni to bid goodbye to BBC after thirty years
Veteran broadcaster Hassan Arouni has told this medium that in a Matter of days he will be bidding goodbye to the BBC World Service after 30 years with the Corporation in London. Hassan who got into radio broadcasting in 1989 as a student in the University of Sierra Leone, revealed how he had a brief stint at the Public Service broadcaster at the time which was the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service(SLBS), when they were looking for new voices and he had Auditioned. He went on to say that to his surprise, he was told that "You have the same voice as the First Director-General of the National Broadcaster at Independence who was John Akar." He recounted being in the SLBS studio for voice testing when one of the producers there , came with a recorded interview that John Akar had done , with the last Governor-General of Sierra Leone or one of the Governor-Generals and remembered how his hair standing on end because he thought he was listening to himself when he heard his voice , and stated that's how he got into radio broadcasting. Hassan who started out as a volunteer for the BBC in 1993 while doing his Masters in Journalism in the UK , had returned home to Sierra Leone to conduct some interviews and recordings around the time of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) coup that had happened in the Country at the time. This interview had started off his work with the corporation. His announcement is coming in the wake of the departure of his former Colleague Bola Mosuro who spent 31 years with the Corporation. Hassan Arouni who became a great voice on Radio, covered important events for the BBC's flagship programmes , Focus On Africa and Network Africa has decided to leave the BBC but he is also expected to do his last edition of Focus On Africa before bidding farewell to the Corporation. - BSL activates national payment switch, a system that seeks to enhance banking activities
The Bank of Sierra Leone has activated the national payment switch, an electronic payment platform that allows individuals and businesses to quickly and securely transact among banks of Sierra Leone. The switch was activated on the 29th April 2023. The system which acts as an integrated one, allows the use of Automated Teller Machine cards among the different banks already linked, such as Ecobank, Guarantee Trust Bank, Rokel Commercial Bank, Sierra Leone Commercial bank, Union Trust Bank and United Bank of Africa. This payment switch is significant for the country as it provides a modern and efficient payment tool that will help facilitate enhanced economic activity and promote financial inclusion. This electronic payment system is built on the latest technologies and is designed to comply with the highest security standards. The implementation of the national payment switch is part of the Bank of Sierra Leone's commitment to promoting a cashless economy in the country. By reducing the reliance on cash, the bank hopes to minimize cash shortages, ease transactions and foster more trust in banking services, which will promote economic activity and financial stability. Mohamed Gento Kamara, a businessman turned politician has completed his nomination process as the Sierra Leone People’s Party Mayoral candidate for the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone, in the June 24th 2023 elections. Kamara submitted his papers to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Friday 28th April, 2023, escorted by his wife and welcomed by well wishers. Gento was nominated by the leader of the Sierra Leone people’s party himself who happens to be the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio as a first step of the nomination, with the second step being the submission of documents. The nomination process requires candidates to submit a number of documents, including their nomination forms filled in and signed, as well as their party nomination, national identification documents and police clearance. After completing the nomination process, Kamara expressed his gratitude to his supporters and well-wishers. “I am humbled by the support I have received, and I promise to work hard to make Freetown a better place for all citizens,” he said. The Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) has held its annual track and field Athletics Championship at Havelock , kortright for the first time in thirteen years. IPAM's Inter-hall Athletics Championship saw the emergence of Esther B Bangura as the best female athlete , while Moi-Soko Kaisamba emerged as the best male Athlete. Beaming with Joy , over the return of Inter-Hall Athletics Meet at IPAM , Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Miriam Elizabeth Conteh-Morgan , described the moment as exciting and urge the students to celebrate a feat of Inter-Hall athletics fanfare in the history of the Country's leading business School IPAM after 13 years in the wilderness. The quest for winning was visibly demonstrated by the athletes who represented the four halls in the Institute. At the height of the Sport meet , the Deputy Registrar Munda JS Lebbie, expressed huge delight for the historic milestone covered and noted that the platform would serve as a gateway to earmark alhletes and set them off on to the future. Samuel Turay excelled himself in the 100M dash, to help Edward Cooper Hall clinch the Championship title in. Samuel maintained that his participation that projected and dominated in the race was a normal feat for him. Nancy Nyallay, also of Edward Cooper Hall added that the competition is a turning point for the athlete's career. Nancy hopes to keep her glittery career intact to reach the International level by uplifting the Country's flag in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games. After the events , Edward Cooper Hall took first position on securing a total points of 232 , While May Parker Hall came second with 165 points , Nat Wellington came third and fourth Kwame Adjei to 140 and 124 points respectively. The Managing Director of Rokel Commercial bank Dr. Walton Gilpin and Prof. Miriam Elizabeth Conteh-Morgan dished out the trophies and certificates to deserving athletes.
- Cricket Sierra Leone Head Coach Kenneth Masinga, turns attention to developing School Cricket
The head Coach of the Sierra Leone Cricket Association Kenneth Masinga has disclosed that the full implementation of the International Cricket Council's Scorecard will monumentally enhance Sierra Leone's School Cricket development in the Country. Kenneth, made this disclosure during a rigourous training session with some of the Female players at the Prince of Wales School Cricket Oval. He maintained that positives from the scorecard are expected to be replicated once the stage is set for International Competition, as that is the surest way of transforming the game. The recent success of the Female team in Nigeria is not unconnected to the many strides the SLCA is making to reach major milestones in growing the game. The South African trainer also applauded the Cricket Sierra Leone and its many partners for their unwavering support to the Coaches, players and administrators alike as they pulled through tough times to proudly represent the Nation. As for the players they sounded super optimist , while gaining match requirements and improving their skills , techniques in bowling for subsequent Competitions. Many of the players also appreciated Kenneth Masinga and Sarah Johnson for the concerted effort they put in daily at the Prince of Wales School training centre. According to the SLCA Media, Cricket is in 117 Secondary schools around the country and that was the more reason why they want to target all 958 Secondary schools in the country by the close of 2023. As for Cricket Sierra Leone they now remain hopeful to take on other teams in both the South Africa and Rwanda qualifiers.

The Independent record label, Kabaka Multimedia entertainment, has recently announced the signing of two new acts to their roster. The signing was done on their sixth year anniversary to mark their return back to the business of managing artists, after their bitter sweet experience on their last sojourn. According to the label owner, AbuBakarr Turay, past efforts had all but confirmed mutterings that the entertainment business, specifically the managing of talents, is not one of gratitude or profits but maintained that his belief in the Arts and the necessity of sacrificing for a belief, has renewed his commitment to give it all another go. The two signees, named King Piper(real name Othman Tao) and Dove Mambu(real name Ahmed Mambu) are singers with experience in music production. KME also revealed a re-signing of Rapper Kracktwist, a departee and returnee to the label. During the unveiling in a live video, AbuBakarr Turay ESQ known as Kabaka commended other entertainment contributors of years past who had made entertainment into the business that it is currently but remarked that the agenda was missed a little bit which allowed other West African countries to grow past our level and reach in music for instance. - President Bio opens a forty bed hospital in Lokomasama, Northern Sierra Leone
President Julius Maada Bio has today 28th April, 2023, made a visit to the opposition’s stronghold of Port Loko to thank them for their support during his tenure as the Head of State of the Republic of Sierra Leone. He was accompanied by stakeholders of the northern province who have been supportive to his agenda, most notably, the Hon. Alpha Kanu, a former Executive member of the All People’s Congress Party, who had reportedly tendered his resignation earlier on today. Speaking, Honourable Alpha Kanu remarked to the people assembled that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio had been dedicated to fulfilling his promise to complete the forty bed Field Hospital in Lokomasama, to ensure a reduction in the rate of infant and maternal mortality rate. Alpha Kanu also pointed out President Bio’s securing of a modernized ambulance, to safely transport people to and from the hospital, which was a genuine challenge in the recent past. He reminded that though President Bio or his immediate relatives might never come in need of the use of the facilities, he had pursued the completion tirelessly with no urging from anyone. Minister of Health and Sanitation Dr. Austin Demby explained that President BIo’s narrative of human capital development engulfs the improvement in health and facilities which prompted the construction of a smaller forty bed hospital in Lokomasama despite the larger hospital in Lungi. He continued that facilities such as the digitally equipped lab, fully stocked pharmacy and theater for surgical procedures, makes this hospital one that is situationally prudent. President Julius Maada Bio addressing those gathered acknowledged the challenges faced by the people of Port Loko and promised to continue working towards addressing them. He explained his longtime relationship with the people of the north, reminiscent of his selection of his running mates, in the persons of Dr. Kadie Sesay and current Vice President Juldeh Jalloh who both hail from the Portloko district, Northern province. He informed the gathering of undertakings such as the newly constructed Lungi terminal, hospitals and newly commisssioned industrial zone all within Portloko and its surroundings, demonstrating his ties and hopes for development of the province. He emphasized the importance of unity and called on all Sierra Leoneans to put aside their political differences and work together for the betterment of the country, in this case a support for his reelection bid in the June 24th Presidential elections. Residents of the long-standing opposition stronghold in Sierra Leone welcomed the President and expressed their willingness to work together with the ruling party for the development of the district. They further promised an eighty percent voter turnout in favor of the ruling government of the Sierra Leone People’s party, guaranteeing their continued stay in office.
- Justice Fisher refuses the defense’s application to release the passport of Dr. Samura Kamara
High Court Judge Justice Adrian Fisher, presiding over the Anti-Corruption Commission’s case against one Mr. Saidu Nallo and five others, including the Presidential Candidate of the All People’s Congress Party, has refused the defense’s application to release the passport of Dr. Samura Kamara to enable him to travel out of the country to the United Kingdom, for a twelve days period. The application was filed for leeway for the use of his passport for days between the 2nd to the 14th May, 2023 to allow him to attend a meeting with the Marlborough House dialogues, organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat. The defense had emphasized that Samura’s visit was of national importance to promote peace and security during this current electioneering process. The state had outlined a circumvention of State and Judicial procedures required for an invitation organized by the Commonwealth and a past deviation from a scheduled visit, on a previous granting of the use of his passport. The court had also pointed out delays in informing the court in ample time to verify details stated and had all in all rejected the application on these grounds. Justice Fisher had advised the defense to refile with clarified details therein, on the 3rd May 2023. The matter has been adjourned to 14th July, 2023 to prevent any interruptions to the electioneering process in which Dr. Samura Kamara is a main participant and his bail continues. Kamara is facing charges of corruption related to his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
