Hon. Lahai Marah, Chairman of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Falaba District and former Member of Parliament for Constituency 042, was arrested on Sunday by the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Sierra Leone Police in Mongo Chiefdom. The incident has since drawn significant public attention due to his senior political role in the district.
Speaking in an interview with Sarah Kalley Blog following his release, Hon. Marah explained that his arrest was connected to public statements he made regarding peace and warnings he issued about election rigging. He noted that he had urged that the 2028 elections should not mirror the controversies of the 2023 electoral cycle.
According to him, the arrest occurred while he was returning from Mongo Chiefdom. Upon reaching the final checkpoint in Kabala, police officers reportedly stopped him and placed him under arrest. He said that after officers contacted the regional headquarters, he was ordered to be transported to Freetown for further investigation.
However, the situation took another turn during the journey. At around 7:30 p.m., while approaching Gbareh Junction, Hon. Marah said the police received fresh instructions directing that he be returned to the region. Upon being taken back, he was subsequently released without further incident.
Hon. Marah resigned from Parliament after the April 2023 general elections to dedicate his time exclusively to his role as APC District Chairman, making his encounter with law enforcement particularly noteworthy within political circles.
The arrest and sudden release of such a prominent political figure is expected to spark national discussion, with residents, supporters, and analysts watching closely for developments.
